Hello everyone! My name is Jeanne Marie B. Quiñanola. But I go by the nickname Shiva. I graduated with a degree in Bachelor of Science in Mathematics at Mindanao State University - Iligan Institute of Technology this July. I’m currently working as a communications and marketing officer at a social enterprise and design company. I’m so excited to meet everyone here. ![]()

Hi Shiva! Congrats on your graduation!
That’s such an exciting milestone, and it’s so nice to see someone from a math background working in communications and marketing, super interesting mix! I’m a graduating student taking up BS Chemistry, but I’ve been volunteering in Community Engagement for a while now. ![]()
Did anyone ever ask you why you chose something that isn’t aligned with your course? I get that question a lot haha! It’s always so inspiring to see people exploring beyond their fields. ![]()

Hello Vosh! Thank you so much for checking in, and apologies for the very late reply. I’m also really happy to see so many people like you exploring opportunities beyond their original fields!
I sometimes feel that jumping into a completely different environment—one that my course or college didn’t really prepare me for—can be quite alienating. That’s why seeing someone like you become comfortable in a field that’s completely different from what you studied is genuinely inspiring, especially with the pressure to keep everything aligned with the supposed “traditional” path.
As for your question, I work remotely and the team is small, so that’s partly why no one really asks me about it. I also feel na the people who are close to me, sanay na rin sila that I keep on changing fields and di talaga ako stick to one na kind of person when it comes to career.
Shifting into mathematics was also a big transition. I remember na some people were shocked that I enrolled in a math program given how I hated math in high school, and they expected me to pursue polsci or something related since I joined debate competitions and was part of a journalism program.
I also worked as a cashier in a fast food chain for less than six months and joined a startup competition. So yeah, I’ve been all over the place, which sometimes feels messy. But I think I’m slowly gaining clarity on what I really really want to do in the future.
