Before debunking or confirming this myth, best to clarify with yourself what you mean by
âfastâ (also âadvancingâ but if that isnât clear with yourself⌠thatâs a whole 'nother discussion entirely").
This has to be clear as to some people, âfastâ means 6 month, while to others,
âfastâ means 1 year, or even 2 years. Given these different meanings, going âfastâ has to be clear to you AND to the people youâre working with. If youâre in an industry whose products take time to be produced, it would likely take much more time to advance in your career as the proof of concept will not be readily shown to the higher ups.
However, just because you are not expected to go fast, does not mean you are not doing something wrong either. In college, I found myself joining numerous orgs to help build my capabilities, and to also spread myself out and broaden my horizons. This led to me not exactly having a deep commitment to any of the orgs as I was being spread too thin. Thus, to an extent, I did find myself missing out of certain opportunities. However, I donât think I should have overcorrected and focused on 1 org as I did learn numerous things from joining different orgs.
Overall, I would say, If youâre not advancing fast, you might be doing something wrong, but make sure your goals are clear to you.
There are people who realized things earlier in life and some that realize a bit later but still win. We have our own pace and journey to take. I want to stick to the idea that this is a myth, we have our own time to shine. Itâs just a certain realization we need to be aware of in order to realize what we actually want and how willing we are to act upon it.
âNot advancing fastâ doesnât necessarily mean no progress. Itâs still an ongoing process. If youâre stuck and in the same place where you are before then thatâs the time when youâre doing something wrong.
